As a cigar
smoker myself, I am obsessed with maintaining the proper temp and
humidity levels in my humidors. While I’ve been told countless times
that 70 degrees & 70% is the optimum environment for my smokes, I have
found that is not true for all cigars. Some cigars like more humidity,
up to 75% while others need to be a bit drier at 65% (and less) to
achieve that perfect burn. That’s why I keep several boxes at
different humidity levels to maintain my eclectic collection of
smokes. Notwithstanding the differing humidity levels, I do strive to
keep the boxes in a 70 degree or (preferably) cooler environment.
Whatever your preferences (or your
cigar's preferences) may be, the bottom line is the necessity to
maintain the proper environment in which to store your smokes. A
slight deviation of a couple degrees in temperature or percent RH
should be expected and is something we all live with. . .whether you
know it or not. I see MANY advertisements for these types of
(hygrometer) instruments that have published specifications for
accuracy that are absolutely impossible to achieve. I was working in
electronic instrument manufacturing 30 years ago, and back then, 5%
was the achievable industry standard for accuracy of electronic
instruments. Today, most instruments maintain a level of accuracy from
3% to 5%. Anyone that provides you a level of accuracy value better
than that is simply not telling you the truth!
We test ALL of our hygrometers using a
laboratory-grade hygrometer-thermometer that is NIST TRACEABLE.
The National Institute
of Standards and Technology is the government authority on,
among many things, calibration and references. Even these highly
accurate instruments used for testing come with published
specifications of 3% accuracy. So how can anyone specify accuracy
levels better than what they use to verify the instrument under test?
The answer, quite simply, is they cannot. While it is not impossible
to achieve a higher level of accuracy, you can be assured that it
certainly cannot be done on a $25, $100, or even a $1000 hygrometer!
There was a real “comfort” seeing the lab
hygrometer calibrate to within a tenth of one percent of the
calibrated RH element. And it is simply amazing to watch the
individual humiGAUGE™ hygrometer units track the laboratory hygro as
the RH was moved up and down in our test chamber. And even though the
humiGAUGE™ tracks the calibration system, we can only specify an
accuracy of 3% because THAT is the level of accuracy published by the
calibration system manufacturer. While watching these hygrometers
under test track the system, I knew we were well within one percent of
“reality”. However, we cannot generate an accuracy specification
that is greater than the instrument that confirms its accuracy. So
whenever you are looking at other hygrometers, be aware of the
standards calibration and published specifications for accuracy.
What makes our digital hygrometers
better? One simple item – the “sensor”. This is the element, commonly
known as a “transducer” that creates the level of accuracy and
epitomizes the humiGAUGE™ precision. The sensor, at the manufacturing
level, ranges in cost from a few cents to a few dollars in high volume
purchasing. And I can tell you that it is here, at the manufacturing
and component level, the rubber truly meets the road. After looking at
many of the hygrometers on the market today, the one thing that was so
common to all of them is the quality (or rather, the lack of it) of
the sensor installed in their hygrometers. While I won’t name names, I
can assure you that the humiGAUGE™ instruments we proudly sell are
equipped with the highest quality components, including a sensor that
is unmatched by any other cigar hygrometer sold on the market today.
To ensure the delivery of the humiGAUGE™
quality, we perform testing and calibration checks of each and every
instrument we ship. So you can be assured that the performance of the
humiGAUGE™ hygrometers meets or exceeds the level of accuracy that are
published on our web site and included with every instrument’s
one-year written warranty. Additionally, our satisfaction guarantee
assures that you will be pleased with your instrument purchase . . .or
we’ll refund your money. It can’t be any easier than that.
So why not try the humiGAUGE™, the NEW
standard in precision cigar care?
